Today, I stepped out on the porch just when this little girl was walking by. Apparently she was walking home from school since she had her school uniform on with a hot pink book bag slung over her shoulder. Her natural hair was in a poofy ponytail sitting on top of her head, she couldn’t be older than nine.
I told her “I like you hair!”
she said “Thank you!” and kept walking.
I watched her for a little, when she got a few yards away from the house she touched her hair.
Children, specifically girls, are very self conscious, this is why I try to instill as much pride in kids as I can. It doesn’t even take much effort, if it’s a little compliment or spending time talking to children, it makes a difference. It also makes you feel good to know that you’ve brighten a little child’s day just with a few words, I know it makes me feel good, especially because I would have loved to hear compliments when I was a child.
